From your Deer Park dentist: The Importance of Oral Hygiene.Maintaining your oral health is more important than ever now that oral health has been linked with overall health. Dentists and physicians alike now understand that periodontal health can affect other health issues such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and vice versa. Known as the oral systemic connection, it means that the bacteria that cause gum disease can travel to other areas of the body and contribute to other health issues. Your Deer Park dentist discusses the importance of oral hygiene and how you can maintain your oral health.

Brush Your Teeth

Did you know that how you brush your teeth is just as important as how often you brush? You should be brushing at least two times per day, however you also need to use proper brushing techniques in order to remove plaque and protect your gums. Brushing too vigorously can damage your gums and cause them to recede. Brush gently for at least two minutes in slow circular motions and massage the gums.

Choosing the right toothbrush also makes a difference in your brushing success. Most dentists will recommend that you use a soft bristle brush with a smaller head that reaches your back teeth easily. You may want to invest in an electric brush that will do the hard work for you. Not only is it gentle on your gums, it also has a timer so you’ll always achieve optimum brushing.

Eat Healthy Foods

Most of us know that sugar is the number one enemy of our teeth, and this is because it fuels the bacteria that cause tooth decay. Did you know however, that eating fruits and vegetables actually improves your oral health? It’s true!

This is because eating fruits and veggies actually increases saliva flow, which helps to wash away food particles and debris left in your mouth after eating. They also help to neutralize the acids in your mouth that cause tooth decay. Eating a balanced diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables is not only good for overall health; it’s good for your oral health too!

Regular Dental Check Ups

Visiting your Deer Park dentists at least twice per year is recommended in order for you to maintain optimum oral health. Your hygienist will remove excessive plaque from your teeth, as well as offer guidance, tips and techniques for proper brushing and flossing. You’ll also be screened for oral health issues such as periodontal (gum) disease, tooth decay, and oral cancer.

Believe it or not, your dentist is able to detect oral health issues much earlier than you can. The earlier you’re able to detect these issues, the better your chances are for a less invasive and costly treatment.
